US healthcare firm Merck is spending US$250 million to expand its manufacturing, marketing, and research activities in Singapore.
The investment will be made over the next 10 years, said Merck in a joint statement with the Economic Development Board (EDB) to announce the signing of the long-term agreement.
This will cover site improvements at its manufacturing facilities in Tuas and capacity building for biotech operations and technology support for new product launches. Merck will also spend S$700 million on local research activities.
Merck plans to collaborate with local universities and training partners overseas to beef-up the technical skills of its Singapore-based workforce, the statement said.
It currently has 1,500 employees in manufacturing, marketing and sales.
To date, Merck has invested US$1.5 billion in Singapore since it opened up its manufacturing facility in 1996.
